Programs supported by Kentucky Blues Society

Kentucky Blues Society is an affiliate of the national Blues Foundation (www.blues.org) and has been in some form since 2002. And is the conduit for bringing nationally recognized NBF blues music programs to Kentucky.

Lesson plans are now available to educators in The Blues Teacher’s Guide. The guide includes a compact disc comprising the seminal blues songs referenced in the lesson activities, essays on the history of the blues and blues musicology, and a blues bibliography, discography, and glossary. A downloadable version of the Blues Teacher’s Guide, including song samples from the accompanying CD, are available online.

The programs performers offer are the following:

  • 1. A one hour school assembly
  • 2. An all day workshop that either moves from class to class or remains in the same classroom all day.
  • 3. Artist in Residency programs that last from a week to a full month. These usually culminate in an evening performance or performance at a funding festival.

Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues world.

NOW ACCEPTING Applications for International Blues Challenge representatives 2007!

KY Blues plans to have musical representatives in two categories for IBC 2006. Band and solo/duo. It is an opportunity no blues musician would want to miss. The local selection process will use the same criteria as the IBC does.
  • 1. Blues Content
  • 2. Talent: This category is self-explanatory--the act's vocal and/or instrumental skills.
  • 3. Originality: Original work is encouraged.
  • 4. Stage Presence
  • 5. Overall impression: This category rates how well a group works together.
To find out more about this competition, go to IBC Rules.

Kentucky Blues History Project

This year the Kentucky Blues Society begins its Kentucky Blues History Project. Documenting the great contribution Kentuckians have made to blues music. The first blues guitar ever recorded was by a Kentucky man, Sylvester Weaver. Ragtime (the precursor to jazz and blues) was first popularized by a Kentucky man, Ernest Hogan. The man credited as the "Father of Ragtime", Ben R. Harney was a Kentucky man. These and many other great Kentucky contributions to music risk being lost unless documented.
